DURING THE MOVE
To make sure everything goes well:
-
be there on moving day. Don't leave before your helpers. If you have to leave, be sure to let them know who can answer their questions in your absence.
-
you must have the necessary packing supplies. To make the job easier for those packing the items, get all the necessary supplies (boxes, tape, bubble wrap, and others). (Tip: often, the moving company agrees to take back unused materials.)
-
do not overfill the boxes. The box should not be too heavy; one person should be able to carry it alone.
-
clearly label boxes. If necessary, write "HEAVY: BOOKS" for those who will be carrying the boxes. To prevent spills and breakage, write "FRAGILE" and "TOP." Indicate the room where the box will go and the contents to facilitate unpacking.
-
stuff items well. Be sure to cover sharp ends to avoid injury.
-
check the lighting, temperature, and phone service. Light the rooms and turn on the heating or air conditioning to make the movers comfortable. Make arrangements with the phone company to have phone service in the house you are leaving and at your new address on moving day. Before moving, also check that the lights are working in your new home.
-
cover the floor with rugs. If it's snowing or raining, beware of wet or muddy surfaces. Place rugs to protect floors from dust and prevent movers from slipping.
-
clear access to the house and yard. Movers must have complete freedom of movement. If necessary, remove handrails from stairs, trim hedges and trees, and leave gates open for easier access. Remember to keep dogs on a leash and keep children and their toys away from the movers.
-
vacuum your furniture before moving day. It's nicer to move a dust-free, pet-hair-free chair or sofa. (Don't forget to vacuum under the cushions too!).
-
provide drinks, especially in hot weather, to avoid dehydration. You probably value your belongings, so avoid giving them alcoholic beverages. They are prohibited from consuming them during and even after the move.
-
check the nooks and crannies. Take a final look in drawers and cabinets.
